Which Denim Jacket Should You Choose? Differences Between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3

How to choose the right denim jacket
If you're thinking about buying a men’s denim jacket, you’ve probably come across terms like Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.
But what do they really mean? And most importantly: which model should you choose?
In this guide, I’ll explain the differences between the three main types of denim jackets, so you can understand which one best fits your style, your body type and the way you wear denim.
The history of denim jackets (briefly)
The three main types originate from models developed by Levi Strauss & Co. during the 20th century.
These models — Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 — have become the standard on which many denim jackets are still based today, including modern and Japanese reinterpretations.
Understanding their evolution helps you choose with more awareness.
Type 1 – The most authentic denim jacket (heritage style)

The Type 1 (early 1900s) is the first true structured denim jacket.
Features:
- Single chest pocket
- Front box pleats
- Back cinch (cinch back)
- Short and wide fit
Who is it for?
- Those who love authentic vintage denim
- Those looking for a true heritage look
- Those who want an iconic and distinctive piece
Personally, as the owner of Toyo Denim, I’m a big fan of the Type 1: it’s the purest form of the denim jacket, with details that reflect its original workwear roots. It’s not the easiest to wear, but it has the strongest character.
Type 2 – The most balanced denim jacket

The Type 2 (1950s) is the natural evolution of the Type 1.
What changes:
- Two chest pockets
- The cinch back disappears
- Front pleats remain
- More proportioned silhouette
Who is it for?
- Those who want a balance between vintage and modern
- Those looking for a structured but more versatile jacket
- Those who appreciate faithfully reproduced Japanese denim
Again, speaking as an enthusiast: the Type 2 is one of my favorites. It still carries the heritage soul, but it’s easier to style compared to the Type 1. For many, it’s the best compromise when you’re unsure which denim jacket to choose.
Type 3 – The modern and versatile denim jacket

The Type 3 (1960s), also known as the Trucker Jacket, is the most widespread model today.
Features:
- Slimmer cut
- No front pleats
- V-shaped chest seams
- Slightly longer length
Who is it for?
- Those looking for an easy-to-wear denim jacket
- Those who prefer a slimmer fit
- Those who want a versatile casual piece
Differences between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3
| Model | Pockets | Front Pleats | Cinch Back | Fit | Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | 1 | Yes | Yes | Boxy | Pure workwear |
| Type 2 | 2 | Yes | No | Balanced | Versatile heritage |
| Type 3 | 2 | No | No | Slim | Modern casual |
Which denim jacket should you really choose?
Choosing a denim jacket is not just about aesthetics, but also about proportions, fit and overall character.
If you’re buying your first denim jacket, you’re probably looking for something versatile, easy to style and suitable for everyday life. In this case, a model inspired by the Type 3 is often the most immediate choice: more modern lines, slimmer fit and easier styling.
If instead you’re drawn to denim in its most authentic form, with historical details and construction faithful to the original models, then you should consider a Type 1 or a Type 2.
The Type 1 is pure heritage identity: shorter, wider, with iconic details like the cinch back. It’s a bold choice, less common, but with unique character.
The Type 2, on the other hand, represents an extraordinary balance: it maintains the vintage soul with more manageable proportions. It’s often the ideal meeting point between history and practicality.
Personally, as an enthusiast, I feel closer to the Type 1 and Type 2: they have a different, more authentic presence, and over time they develop incredible character. But the right choice is always the one that best fits the way you live your denim.
Why knowing the history helps you buy better
When you buy a quality denim jacket, you’re not just purchasing a garment, but a precise construction, a carefully designed fit and a century-old tradition.
Understanding the differences between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 allows you to:
- avoid wrong purchases
- choose the right fit
- invest in a piece that will last for years
